Tottenham plan ‘mass overhaul’ of wage structure amid fan outrage over £200,000-a-week star

Tottenham Hotspur’s owners are preparing a comprehensive restructuring of the club’s salary framework should they secure their top-flight status for next season.

The Lewis Family Trust, which controls the north London outfit, has conceded that player wages have been inadequately funded for an extended period.

This acknowledgement represents a marked departure from the approach favoured by Daniel Levy, the former executive chairman who departed in September following pressure from the ownership group.

Under Levy’s stewardship, Spurs cultivated a reputation for fiscal restraint in both transfer dealings and remuneration packages.

The club’s predicament has grown increasingly dire following Sunday’s humiliating 4-1 defeat to Arsenal in the north London derby.

Igor Tudor’s side now languish in 16th position, a mere four points separating them from the relegation places.

With eleven fixtures remaining in the campaign, Spurs find themselves in genuinely perilous territory.

Remarkably, the reigning Europa League champions have failed to record a single victory throughout 2026, a statistic that underscores the severity of their decline.

Should the unthinkable occur and relegation materialise, a wholesale departure of the squad’s most valuable players would almost certainly follow.

Tottenham’s wage expenditure stands as the most modest among the Premier League’s elite clubs by a considerable margin.

The most recent accounts for 2023/24 revealed a total outlay of £222m, representing barely half of Manchester City’s £413m during the equivalent period.

Conor Gallagher, recruited from Atletico Madrid for £35m in January, has become the club’s highest-paid footballer on approximately £200,000 weekly, which has stunned fans.

One fan said: “Our highest-paid player is Gallagher? Something is really wrong with Tottenham…”

Another posted: “Wow. He’s not even worth 100k a week. Joke of a football club.”

And a third said: “Why does Spurs insist on overpaying on relegation players?”

Gallagher remains the sole player earning at that threshold, with Cristian Romero and Xavi Simons each receiving £195,000.

By contrast, Arsenal boast seven players on £200,000 or more, whilst Manchester City employ eleven at that level.

The ownership group anticipates substantial recruitment activity following the season’s conclusion, provided Premier League survival is achieved.

Mauricio Pochettino has emerged as the preferred candidate for the permanent managerial position, more than six years after his dismissal by Levy.

Roberto De Zerbi, formerly of Brighton and Marseille, represents an alternative option under consideration.

Those close to the Lewis family have indicated their understanding that final league standings correlate more strongly with wage expenditure than transfer fees.

The 2023/24 wage bill constituted just 42 per cent of revenue, a figure notably below Premier League norms, suggesting considerable scope for increased spending.
