The former world No1 tried everything – she went vegan, vegetarian, and followed high-protein diets. She’d clock 20,000 steps daily and trained on the court regularly.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion found herself unable to shift the pounds following the births of Olympia in 2017 and Adira in August 2023. Despite maintaining her athletic lifestyle, the weight wouldn’t budge.

Now serving as a celebrity ambassador for healthcare company Ro, Williams wants to help normalise conversations around GLP-1 medications.

“I had never taken shortcuts in my career and always worked really hard. I know what it takes to be the best,” Williams said. “So it was very frustrating to do all the same things and never be able to change that number on the scale or the way my body looked.”

After thorough research and medical consultations, Williams started weekly treatments six months following Adira’s birth.

She revealed: “I lost over 31 pounds using my GLP-1, and I was really excited about that weight loss.”

The benefits went beyond the scales – she felt “lighter mentally” and experienced relief from joint pain that had been troubling her knees.

Her recent doctor’s appointment brought more good news. Her blood sugar levels have normalised, and she feels her joints aren’t carrying as much strain and said she hadn’t experienced any side effects from the medication.

“A misconception is that it’s a shortcut,” she said.

“As an athlete and as someone that has done everything, I just couldn’t get my weight to where I needed to be at a healthy place and believe me, I don’t take shortcuts.

She shared on TODAY: “A lot of people are actually on GLP-1s but don’t really want to talk about it, don’t want to say it.

“That’s why I feel like my story is so important because I’m so active.

“I feel like, after having my kids, my body was missing something. I don’t know if it’s something that the GLP-1 has, but I just feel normal again.”

The medication works by mimicking a natural hormone produced after eating, reducing appetite and helping people feel full more quickly.

Williams emphasises it’s not a replacement for healthy habits but enhances the lifestyle choices she was already making.
