USA Winter Olympics star Jack Hughes is America’s new hero after his gold medal-winning goal against Canada on Sunday. But off the ice, things might not be going so smoothly.

Hughes has enjoyed a whirlwind few days since engraving his name into US hockey history in Italy. He has been welcomed to the White House by President Trump and he and his team were celebrated for their success at the State of the Union on Tuesday.

But before becoming America’s hero, Hughes had been linked with dating the Canadian singer Tate McRae. They had even been spotted on dates together in New York – Hughes is based near Manhattan and plays for the New Jersey Devils.

According to Entertainment Tonight, however, it is still too early to say if the high-profile couple will last long as an item – even if Hughes is fond of McRae. The singer, 22, is not said to be wanting something serious at the moment.

The publication quoted a source as saying: ‘Things between Tate and Jack are still new.

‘She’s not looking for something super serious but he really likes her. They are having fun and getting to know each other better.

‘He has gone to her shows and she likes supporting him at games too. They have a lot of the same friends and started hanging out that way.’

McRae, a big hockey fan, was last dating Australian singer ‘The Kid LAROI’ before they broke up last summer.

Hughes was back on the ice with the Devils on Thursday night in Pittsburgh against the Penguins.

He even received a standing ovation from the home fans in Pittsburgh for his efforts on the global stage for the United States.

On Wednesday night, Hughes addressed his home crowd back in New Jersey and joked about losing some teeth in the win over Canada.

‘I’m so proud and so happy that the men’s and women’s hockey teams brought the gold medal back to America,’ Hughes told the crowd. ‘And I’m so proud to represent the New Jersey Devils organization and to represent the great state of New Jersey.

‘I get goosebumps when I watch it back,’ Hughes added, before joking: ‘I have a couple of half-teeth.’

He’ll be hoping that, when it comes to his love life with McRae, his teeth are the only thing that is broken.
