Cole Palmer locked in legal battle with French winery over blocked trademark application

A trademark battle has emerged between Chelsea footballer Cole Palmer and prestigious French winery Chateau Palmer over the player’s attempt to register his “Cold Palmer” nickname.

The 23-year-old striker filed an application to protect his famous shivering goal celebration and moniker for commercial use across multiple product categories.

The dispute centres on Palmer’s inclusion of alcoholic beverages, particularly wine, within his trademark application. This has prompted formal opposition from the renowned Bordeaux estate, whose bottles retail for £750.

The Intellectual Property Office must now adjudicate between the Premier League star and the esteemed vineyard from France’s Margaux region.

His filing states: “Alcoholic beverages; alcoholic fruit beverages; pre-mixed alcoholic beverages; wines; spirits; liqueurs; alcoholic energy drinks; low alcoholic beverages; none of the aforesaid including wines complying with the specifications of the PDO Champagne.”

The inclusion of wine in this list triggered the French vineyard’s intervention. Representatives from both parties have submitted their arguments to government lawyers who will determine the outcome of this intellectual property conflict.

The French estate traces its origins to 1814, when British military officer Charles Palmer purchased what was then called Chateau de Gascq. He subsequently renamed the property and developed its vineyard operations.

Wine merchant Berry Bros & Rudd describes the estate as “a leading wine estate in Margaux” and notes that “within its appellation, Palmer is certainly the closest rival to its first growth neighbour, Ch. Margaux.”

Despite holding Third Growth classification, the merchant states that “at their best, the wines of Chateau Palmer are among the greatest anywhere in Bordeaux.”

A 1970 vintage from the estate’s Cru Classe Margaux range was recently priced at £750 per bottle.
