Aston Villa captain has heated clash with own fans after nightmare defeat to Wolves

Aston Villa skipper Ezri Konsa required intervention from fellow players and coaching staff after attempting to confront the club’s own travelling supporters when Friday evening’s match with Wolves concluded.

The 28-year-old defender was observed in an angry exchange with Villa fans at the final whistle, with teammates stepping in to pull him away from the situation.

Tensions had already been running high throughout the contest, with Konsa involved in a heated incident with Wolves defender Toti Gomes during the game itself.

The confrontation came after Villa suffered a disappointing 2-0 loss to their West Midlands rivals at Molineux Stadium, a result that marked another setback in what has become an inconsistent campaign for Unai Emery’s squad.

Joao Gomes and Rodrigo Gomes were on target for the hosts, with their strikes securing three points that spared Wolves from the ignominy of finishing with the Premier League’s worst-ever points haul.

For Villa, the defeat extends a miserable run at this particular ground, where they have failed to claim victory since 2020.

The loss places significant pressure on their Champions League ambitions, with the club’s grip on a top-four berth now precarious.

Should Manchester United secure victory in their outstanding fixture against Crystal Palace on Sunday, Villa would slip to fourth position.

Such a scenario would deal a serious blow to their hopes of competing in Europe’s elite competition next term.

Following the match, Villa’s director of football operations Damian Vidagany took to X to address the supporters’ discontent.

He described the atmosphere in the changing room as “very sad” before manager Emery rallied the group.

“The fans you have the right to feel whatever as football belongs to you,” Vidagany wrote.

“As a professionals we know it, we face it and we take our responsibility but we must always keep balance, look for solutions and run away from extreme emotions and self destruction.”

The club official emphasised the importance of maintaining composure during difficult periods, adding: “Keep unity and balance inside in nights like this one is what makes the difference between a to be a rollercoaster or a STRONG PROJECT.”

Emery, who appeared more composed when addressing journalists after the final whistle, reflected on the dramatic swings his side has experienced this season.

“In September I was worried about being in the relegation zone,” the Spaniard said.

“Then maybe a month ago I was dreaming of fighting with Manchester City and Arsenal for the title.”

The manager issued a direct appeal to the Villa Park faithful as the battle for European qualification intensifies.

“We need to be together players, coaches, fans, everyone.”
